Last July, the College was sad to announce the death of our friend John Shakeshaft, who was a Fellow of St Catharine’s for over 50 years, serving during that time as President, Director of Studies and Fellow Librarian.
As well as his professional career as a radio astronomer, John was an avid collector of pottery, especially 20th century Studio pottery, and he has bequeathed his sizeable collection to the Fitzwilliam Museum which has just opened an exhibition featuring some items.
Another interest of John’s was financial investment, and his considerable success in that field enabled him to leave substantial legacies to the College, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Cavendish Laboratory and other charities with which he was associated. The College is very grateful to John for his commitment throughout his working life and retirement, and the generosity shown by his legacy.
