On the 15th September, the College bade a fond farewell to Dom Mulcrone, our Head Porter for the last 25 years.
After featuring an interview with Dom in the latest edition of The Wheel, we were contacted by many alumni who wanted to share their memories of Dom and wish him well. Here’s a selection:
“I graduated in 2009. I could walk into the P’lodge today and Dom would still know exactly who I am and ask how I've been doing. Great man and a College icon.” – Alex Lesser (2006)
"I recall being a first year undergraduate and missing my boyfriend from home terribly. D and I had a rather tricky conversation about overnight guests. He handled it superbly. How will they ever replace him? Wishing him a very happy and long retirement and with many thanks.” – Emma Grossmith, née Harper (1994)
“He always remembered all of us. Even if we didn't always remember creeping through the P'lodge and up to Woodlark. He knows every one of us to this day. Incredible.” – Ali Merifield (1994)
“I worked with Dom for 4 years when I was the College accountant. A lovely welcome from him I have never forgotten. He was always there when you needed him. My best memory was of Dom leading the ducks across the lawn to a safe home! Happy retirement Dom. St. Catharine’s will clearly miss you!” – Judy Bryett
“I remember that Dom was the first face I saw when I arrived in the mist to start at Catz in 1994. He secretly terrified me – in fact the whole idea of Porters did – but almost immediately and then over the years it became so clear that he was the least terrifying and loveliest man. Whenever I have been back to visit my old College he always remembers me and so many wonderful memories come flooding back. Happy Retirement Dom, and thank you!” – Hannah Yelland, née Roberts (1994)
“Our very best wishes to Dom. I remember him very well from my days at Catz between 1993 and 1997. Thanks very much, Dom, for all the help and guidance!” – Siddhartha Raychaudhuri (1993)
“As a parent of a St Catharine’s student, thank you Dom for your guidance and sense of humour– enjoy your retirement.” – Patricia Anne
“Wow. Happy retirement Dom. Thanks for your patience with me losing my keys.” – Leonie Taber (1995)
“Happy retirement Dom!! The most awesome porter ever!” – Siau Yin Goh (2002)
“What I can't believe is that I left so long ago that Head Porter Dom was after my time! Best wishes for your retirement, Head Porter Dom.” – Caroline Gaskin (1984)
“Good luck Dom, in 25 years you must have touched the lives of literally thousands of students. Have a lovely retirement.” – Charly Lester (2003)
There were many other members who wrote to us to wish Dom well, and here at the College we held a retirement party for him in the SCR, with speeches from the College Bursar Simon Summers, the Dean Dr John Xuereb, and the Master Professor Sir Mark Welland, as well as from Dom himself.
We would like to thank Dom for all of his hard work over the years, and to wish him a very happy retirement.
