For this term's exhibition, we'll be displaying a dozen early books on astronomy, among them Aristotle's thoughts on the 'perfect realities' of the heavens, Newton's application of his theories of motion to the Moon, and the short tract in which Edmund Halley predicted the return of the comet which would thereafter bear his name.
Our exhibition is being held in memory of Dr John Shakeshaft, who passed away in July. John was Director of Studies at St Catharine's for over thirty years (1961-94), Fellow Librarian for over forty years (1962-2004), and President between 1990 and 1994. He became an Emeritus Fellow in 1997. He specialised in radio astronomy, and held several posts at the Royal Astronomical Society, including Editor and Secretary.
Students, Fellows and staff are all welcome, as are interested guests. The books will be on display in the OCR between 12:00 and 2:00.
