Rugby union
The combined might of St Catharine’s and Homerton Colleges faced off against a combined team from Trinity and Christ’s Colleges in the Plate semi-final on 29 April. The opposition were swiftly despatched and the final score was 57-3. (Cambridge University College Rugby)
The team (pictured below) then faced off against Jesus College in the Plate final on 6 May. Co-captained by Joe Barney, a second-year Engineering undergraduate, the team endured tough competition and torrential rain, but still came away as Plate champions with a 24-19 victory. Rowing
St Catharine’s rowers represented Cambridge at the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) regatta at the National Water Sports Centre on 29 April–1 May. Tom Heppel, a second-year Psychological and Behavioural Sciences undergraduate, claimed a gold medal in the men’s lightweight intermediate pairs. Lewis Gray, a first-year Geography undergraduate, earned a gold medal in the men’s lightweight four (winning the final by open water) and silver medal in the men’s lightweight intermediate pairs. Football
A win against Selwyn College means that the St Catharine’s men’s second team has secured promotion to Division 3 for next year. Their final match of the year (date TBC) will determine whether or not they are crowned champions of Division 4. (Captain's report)
Lacrosse
The St Catharine’s mixed team had a good Cuppers this year! After topping their group with one loss and three wins, they then defeated Jesus College on golden goal in the quarter-finals. Sadly a narrow 2-1 loss to Robinson College in the semi-finals brought their 2023 campaign to an end. They still have plenty to celebrate though in the intercollege league, having gone from Division 3 to securing a spot in Division 1 in the space of a year. (Captain’s report)
Cycling (during the vacation)
St Catharine’s students made up two-thirds of the Cambridge men’s team at BUCS 25-Mile Time Trial. The team took home bronze medals thanks to outstanding rides by Tim Welsh, a Chemistry PhD student, and Tom Wade (2016, Natural Sciences), who has returned for a PhD at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. Tom was also on the podium earlier in the vacation when Cambridge secured best overall team for its men’s and women’s results at the BUCS Team Time Trial. (Cambridge University Sport)
Badminton (from the end of last term)
The College was represented in all three disciplines (open, women's, and mixed) in the finals of the Cuppers competition on 11 March, and claimed gold in the women's and mixed categories. There were tight matches against Downing College, who knocked out our open team but couldn’t beat our first women’s pair (who won 21-19). (Captain’s report)
