The following highlights from various sports clubs and teams were compiled from recent reports. If any captains or team members have a result that you'd like to feature in the next round-up, please contact comms@caths.cam.ac.uk.
Women’s badminton
Returning to league matches as reigning Cuppers champions, St Catharine’s players definitely had a spring in their step: the first team won 5-0 against the Perse and 3-2 against Churchill College.
Mixed Lacrosse
The College’s lacrosse players dispatched their first opposition of the new season (St John’s) in a 5-0 victory. The captains report that the new players did really well and they are always open to people joining the squad.
Mixed basketball
Our basketball players opened up their league campaign in surprisingly controversial fashion, beating Christ's College 32-27 on a rule book technicality. The game was abandoned with two minutes left on the clock due to the match running over the court's booking time - but as Catz were in the lead at this point, for now we take the victory, with potential for the last two minutes to be played out later in the season. Captains Barney and Nathan were very excited to welcome new players to the squad, with many rookies playing vital roles in a toughly contested affair.
Rowing
The St Catharine’s Boat Club has been welcoming back seniors and giving novices their first taste of rowing, with tubbing sessions and eights over the last couple of weeks. New this year is a weekly circuits session in the College’s badminton courts every Monday at 5.45pm – all Catz students are welcome to join!
St Catharine’s students face their first test of the season at the University IVs Regatta (afternoons 28 October–1 November): a men’s crew and a women’s crew will be taking part in this knock-out competition, which starts just downstream of the Motorway Bridge and finishes just downstream of the Railway Bridge.
Members of the College recently represented Cambridge at the Head of the Charles Regatta (18–20 October) in Boston, Massachusetts:
- Alumnus David Gillard (1990, Natural Sciences) finished second with Guy Pooley in the Men’s Senior Master Doubles [50+]
- Matt Edge (2018, Natural Sciences; back for a Chemistry PhD) was in the 6 seat for the B crew in the Men’s Championship Eights, which finished 19th – jumping six places and only 3 seconds from winning fastest second 8.
