The Master and Fellows of St Catharine's College have the pleasure of inviting members of the Woodlark Society to a Luncheon, to be held in College on Saturday 15 March 2025.
Members are invited to arrive from 11:00am for tea and coffee in the McGrath centre where, at 11:30am, Mr Quinton Carroll (1988) will give a lecture on 'Cambridge before Catz: what MIGHT be underneath our College'. There will also be an accompanying display of a selection of the archaeological objects held by the College Archive.
At 12:30pm, a drinks reception will take place in the McGrath Centre followed by Lunch in the Hall at 1:00pm.
The dress code is lounge suit or equivalent.
About the speaker:
Quinton Carroll is Head of Natural and Historic Environment at Cambridgeshire County Council. He came up to Catz from Repton School in 1988, studying Part I ASNaC and Part II History. He initially joined HSBC as a graduate trainee, becoming a lending manager in the main Cambridge Branch before deciding it wasn't for him, so returned to Catz in 1996 to study for an MPhil in World Archaeology, focussing on the Anglo-Saxon period and especially church archaeology. He joined the council in 1999 as an Archaeological Officer, rising to 'County Archaeologist' in 2010 and now heads a combined service that includes archaeology/heritage, biodiversity/ecology, greenspaces and flood risk.
He is Archaeological Advisor for Peterborough Diocese since 2002 and has served as nominee of the Secretary of State (DCMS) for two quinquennials on the Church Buildings Council (Archbishops’ Council) and Statutory Advisory Committee on Redundant Churches (Church Commissioners). Within the local authority sector he has been the chair of the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers, and currently co-chairs the Archaeological Archives Forum. He is a current member of the Future of Archaeological Archives Panel (Historic England) and the Advisory Panel on the Archaeology of Burials in England (Ministry of Justice).
