John studied Geography at St Catharine's (1954–57) and joined Unilever upon graduation where he took on a variety of roles, most notably Head of Transport and member of the company's UK Policy Committee.
In 1984 he led the management buy-out of Tibbett & Britten from Unilever and the Dutch Railways, becoming the logistics company's Chairman & Chief Executive. He subsequently oversaw the floatation of Tibbett & Britten in1986 and its growth over the following two decades, establishing operations in 34 countries.
From 2004 until the present, John has supported the development of a wide range of organisations across private, public and charitable sectors, including but not limited to his time as:
- Chairman, Keswick Enterprises – a UK-based private equity investor focused on activities within the logistics and supply chain sectors;
- Chairman, Cranfield Centre for Logistics & Transportation Advisory Board, Cranfield University; and
- Chairman, Transaid Worldwide – the international transport charity (he remains a Transaid Ambassador and staunch supporter).
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport, the Institute of Grocery Distribution, the Institute of Logistics and Transport (Emeritus) and the Royal Society of Arts.
