Marwood Fellowship and student support legacy announced

Wednesday 12 April 2023

St Catharine’s is delighted to announce that it has established additional student support and a named Fellowship at the bequest of alumnus Trevor Marwood MBE (1948, Mechanical Engineering), and his wife Mary, who left a generous legacy to the College in their will.

A significant proportion of the Marwood legacy has been directed towards the St Catharine’s Student Support Fund, which was set up in 2022 to sustain the present and future College community through bursaries for students, widening participation projects, and health and wellbeing initiatives. The Fund is administered by the Tutorial Office at St Catharine’s and will be drawn upon to support students as early as the next academic year.

Professor Michael Sutcliffe (1993) has been chosen by the Governing Body of St Catharine’s as the inaugural Marwood Fellow in Engineering. He is Director of Studies in Engineering and teaches in a wide range of Mechanics and Materials papers as Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cambridge. His research interests include modelling of structures with composite materials, including projects on fan blades with Rolls-Royce and wind turbine blades with Vestas. He is increasingly active in the field of bio-engineering, specialising in the mechanics of soft tissue such as brain and arteries.

Deborah Loveluck (2007), Fellow and Development Director, commented:

“As Development Director and Fellow of St Catharine’s for many years, I will always be moved by the trust, respect and affection our members feel towards their College. Trevor and Mary Marwood understood the value of a Cambridge education. We believe that they would be proud that their legacy will support both this current generation and generations of students to come.”

Trevor and Mary’s nephew Philip Marwood (1972, Mathematics) recently returned to College with his wife Clare. They both had the opportunity to meet Professor Sutcliffe and find out about the impact of the St Catharine’s Student Support Fund.

“As Professor Sutcliffe explained his ideas to us non-specialists, we appreciated what a good teacher he is. Both Clare and I are sure that Trevor would have been hugely pleased with his appointment as the first Marwood Fellow in Engineering. It was also valuable to hear from the Master and the Senior Tutor about the stresses that the cost-of-living crisis is imposing on many students and how the legacy from Trevor and Mary allows the College to offer much-needed financial support.”

Before arriving at Cambridge, Trevor Marwood completed his national service as a cadet and then a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. Trevor was elected President of the St Catharine’s Junior Combination Room, representing the undergraduate community, and went on to graduate with his BA after only two years. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1980 for political and public service in Eastern England.
