What is included in College accommodation?

Please find a summary below of what is included as part of our student accommodation. If you have special requirements, for instance for health or religious reasons, please contact the Accommodation Manager.

Included in your rent

  • Electrical equipment: Please see the summary of included items in the below tables. Please refer to the Accommodation Handbook and our Additional Item Policy for further information on permitted appliances. You are responsible for making sure that any additional electrical appliances you bring are safe to use and British Standard approved. College will arrange for you to have your appliances Portable Appliance Tested once you arrive.
  • Furniture and other fixtures and fittings: Please see the summary of included items below. Students are discouraged from bringing any items of furniture, which would require the permission of the Accommodation Manager in consultation with the Head of Buildings & Maintenance.
  • Laundry provision: Washing machines are provided in all College accommodation areas. N.B. Most sites these are coin operated and students will need to pay for use. 
  • Utilities and internet: Heating, lighting and water bills are all included in your rent, as is high speed broadband internet access. This is available as high speed wi-fi.
  • Security: The Porters' Lodge can be contacted 24/7 if students in College accommodation have any security concerns. In addition, most properties benefit from CCTV.
  • Safety: Fire blankets and extinguishers are provided. Fire alarms are in operation and tested every week (typically Wednesday mornings between 9am and 12pm).
  • Cleaning in communal areas: Ordinarily, the housekeeping department regularly clean all communal areas, including corridors, kitchens, and communal bathrooms. They also remove rubbish and recycling from these areas. It will be your responsibility to keep the communal areas in good order. Please read the advisory poster displayed in all kitchens/gyps. 
  • Cleaning in bedrooms: Housekeeping clean bedrooms once a fortnight and ensuite bathrooms once a week. 
  • Garden and gardening services: Student accommodation on the Island site, St Chad’s, South Green Lodge, The Vicarage, Barton Road, Grantchester Meadows, Russell Street and Coleridge Road includes access to gardens/courtyards. These areas are maintained by gardeners for residents to enjoy.

Not included in your rent

  • Kitchen utensils: You will need to supply your own utensils, pots, pans, cutlery etc. 
  • Linen and towels: You will need to supply your own.  
  • Television and TV licence: If you wish to watch a television in your room, you will need your own valid annual TV licence: the College doesn't hold a general licence. Please visit the TV Licensing website for further information.
  • Insurance: We can't accept any responsibility for loss or damage to personal property. Please take out your own insurance.
  • Catering: Please refer to the Hall and Dining page for more information.

Bedding: In order to improve our sustainability the College is phasing out providing bedding (duvets and pillows) to students. Undergraduate or postgraduate fresher students from 2024-25 will need to provide their own. The College will continue to provide bedding to all existing students who opt in to receive it via the form. 
Bedding will be available to purchase from the College's Housekeeping department at reduced rates (see below). Any bedding purchased will become the property of the student.
