Philip Bowring Scholarships & Bursaries in Malay World Studies

Thanks to a generous donation by alumnus Philip Bowring MA (1960, History), the College is able to offer funds to support postgraduate members of any nationality reading for master’s or doctoral degrees in the history, geography or culture of the Malay World – principally but not exclusively comprising Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines – by means of the following:

a. the award of one or more full or partial scholarships;

b. the award of one or more travel, research, or maintenance bursaries.

A. Postgraduate scholarships

The Fund provides full or partial scholarships to enable academically outstanding students to undertake research on the Malay World, leading to a degree in the arts, humanities and social sciences at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge. The value of any scholarship awarded will vary each year and be adjusted appropriately to take account of any payment from other sources.

Enquiries about the disciplinary or thematic scope of these scholarships may be addressed to Dr Liana Chua (lclc2@cam.ac.uk) in the first instance. Other enquiries may be addressed to the Philip Bowring Fund Administrator, St Catharine's College at graduate.admissions@caths.cam.ac.uk

Application procedure

In order to be considered for the award, applicants must hold an offer of admission for a postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge. Candidates should thus submit their application to the Postgraduate Admissions Office at the earliest possible opportunity. To do so, please visit https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/

A scholarship from the Philip Bowring Fund can only be held by postgraduate members of St Catharine's College. When submitting their University application, candidates should thus name St Catharine's as their 1st or 2nd choice College. Applicants who originally applied to another College will need to change their College affiliation if they are awarded a scholarship from the Philip Bowring Fund.

Important note

Please be advised that the Philip Bowring scholarship will not be offered in 2024 or 2025. Applications will open again in October 2025 for applicants looking to start their degrees in 2026–27.

B. Project grants

The Philip Bowring Fund invites applications for project grants of up to about £5,000 from postgraduate members of the College who are currently working on topics within its remit (see above). The Panel responsible for the Fund will have full discretion concerning all grants made. Awards may be adjusted appropriately to take account of any payment from other sources.

Application procedure

Please download the project grants application form.

There will be three application rounds each year, with the deadlines in 2023/24 scheduled as follows:

  • 1 October 2023
  • 8 January 2024
  • 31 March 2024

Completed forms should be emailed to the Fund's Director at graduate.admissions@caths.cam.ac.uk before the relevant deadline

Enquiries about the disciplinary or thematic scope of these grants may be addressed to Dr Liana Chua (lclc2@cam.ac.uk) in the first instance. Other enquiries may be addressed to the Philip Bowring Fund Administrator, St Catharine's College at graduate.admissions@caths.cam.ac.uk
